London, Kentucky is the seat of Laurel county, and began as a settlement on the Wilderness Road running north from the Cumberland Gap. The town was formed and named for the city in England in 1826. London is served by US 25, KY 80, I-75, and the Daniel Boone Parkway. The first post office opened in 1831.  The population in 1990 was 5,757.

Museums

 

Colonel Harland Sanders Original Kentucky Fried Chicken Cafe and Museum

US25E and 25W in Corbin, Kentucky. Built in 1940, the dining area seats 76. Artifacts and memorabilia and the history of Colonel Sanders are on display at no charge to the public. 13 Miles from the hotel. Open daily 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 P.M. (606) 528-2163.

 

Levi Jackson State Park

This park features a Mountain Life Museum; a tribute to the 19th century Laurel County, with pioneer relics and Native American artifacts. The McHargue's Mill is a restored working mill, which includes the largest collection of grist millstone collections in the world.
 

KY 229 off US Highway 25, I-75 South of London. Daniel Boone's Trace and Wilderness Road pioneer trails converge here on 896 acres of land donated by the family of Levi Jackson. The park features hiking, horseback riding, picnic shelters, miniature golf, playgrounds and archery range.

Pine Mountain State Resort Park

The Mountain Range is a western section of the giant Appalachian Mountain System. This ia rewarding area for those interested in natural and cultural history. This park is located in an old growth forest with some trees over 200 years old. The park features swimming, nature trails, picnic shelters. Chained Rock with a pinnacle overlook of the town of Pineville on U.S. 25

Barbourville on U.S. 25

Dr. Walker, physician and surveyor, led the first documented expedition through Cumberland Gap and built the first log cabin by a white man in Kentucky in April 1750. A replica of the cabin stands on the original site. The park features picnic shelters, miniature golf, and a gift shop.

 

Daniel Boone National Forrest and State Park

The U.S. Forest maintains 700,000 acres of beautiful timberland in portions of 21 eastern Kentucky counties stretching from Morehead in the north to the Tennessee border. There are nearly 500 miles of trails and 800 miles of road under the forest service. Among the numerous recreational facilities' available are campgrounds, picnic areas, ramps and beaches.

 

Big South Fork National River And Recreation Park

One of the nation's newest national parks established in 1974 and includes 119,000 acres of natural wilderness, rivers, and back country in Southeast Kentucky and Northeastern Tennessee. The park features a visitor center, camping, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, whitewater rafting, and Blue heron Coal Mining Camp, better known as Mine 18. This museum has ghost structures representing the simple home, school, and churches. You can access the area by driving or riding the Big South Fork Scenic Railway.

Laurel Lake State Park

KY Highway 192 in Daniel Boone National Forest. 5,600 acres, 200 miles of shoreline. Fishing includes trout, bass, crappie, walleye and catfish. Exceptional views, water skiing and other water sports are all a part of what Laurel Lake has to offer. houseboat, fishing boats and pontoons are available to rent at the Holly Bay Marina, call 606-864-6542. 20 Miles, and Grove Marina off Highway 25W at Exit 25, Corbin, KY.

 

Cumberland Gap National Historic Park and

A natural break in the Cumberland Mountains, Indians passed through the gap on the trail called the carrior's path. Later Pioneer's called it the Wilderness Road, which was first explored by Dr. Thomas Walker and Daniel Boone. There is a Visitor's Center with Museum, iron furnace, Hensley Settlement, Cudjo Cavern, Pinnacle Overlook, and Cumberland Gap Tunnel.

Called the "Niagara of the South." 150 feet wide with a 67 foot drop, this falls in largest east of the Rockies and south of Niagara. On a clear night under a full moon, the falls displays the only known "MOONBOW" in the Western Hemisphere.
